Resources For Farmer Educators

Do you work with farmers? Do you teach farmer training classes? Would you like to incorporate farm law into your curriculum?

Farm Law is important. That's why The Land Connection and Farm Commons have put together legal issues resources covering six main areas of farm law. Each module includes curriculum, worksheets, powerpoints and a video.

Organizing a Farm Business

  • Typical farm business entities include the sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, limited liability company (LLC), and cooperative. This module briefly discusses the relevant elements of each business entity, and how to choose what is best for your situation.

Land Matters: Zoning and Leasing

  • Whether leasing or buying, farmers need to know the precise nature of the land and the agreement between the parties. This module discusses the legal documents that outline specific aspects of a land use agreement.

Workers and Employees

  • There are plenty of laws that are only applicable to agricultural labor. This module will make sure you can assemble a checklist of legal issues to explore and paperwork to collect when hiring an employee, write a farm employee handbook and know what volunteer agreements really do.

On-Farm Events

  • Agritourism is hot! But is your farm zoned for it? This module will cover whether your farm can legally host events and what sort of insurance and policies you should have in place before inviting the public to visit.

Sales and Taxes

  • Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes. This module will make sure you know what taxes you need to be collecting on which products.

Food Safety

  • Insurance, Liability and Lawsuits, oh my! This module will tell you everything you need to know about food safety laws and how to protect yourself.
