About the farm: Seeking Farmer to join my farm in southwestern Wisconsin…
Looking for a peaceful, mature farmer with experience in developing a small-scale diversified operation or permaculture (beef, sheep, goats, poultry, vegetables, flowers, orchard, woodland management, etc.) who can also help to maintain the farm infrastructure. Tractor, chainsaw, and mechanical skills needed, along with steady temperament, open communication style, and friendly neighborly attitude. This is not a job, mentoring, or internship. It is an opportunity for you to start your own enterprise, while allowing me to continue living in my own house on this beautiful farm through retirement. Win-win!
I have some health limitations, so am no longer actively farming on my own, but could assist/consult at times.
Recently retired from 25 years running a direct-market 100% grass-fed beef cow/calf operation and would like to find someone ready to start their own enterprise on my land in southwestern Wisconsin’s Vernon County, a very scenic and progressive area. 70 acres are not certified but have never been sprayed; about half wooded hillside, half rolling pasture, with a few tillable acres and hay ground. Year-round springs and a creek, with some fencing in place; great set up for rotational grazing. Rent/share/purchase/barter/partnership options possible for the right person after a trial period. 22 vacant acres of woods and pasture around the corner from homestead could stay with the farm or could be sold outright to buyer with the right vision and credentials to manage it in regenerative way, could become an independent operation or remain part of the farm as a whole.
Open to hearing your ideas for the vacant 22a, the homestead 48a, or the entire 70a farm. Keeping options open and brainstorming until something gels.
There is a separate one or two-bedroom, one-bath house available Oct. 1, 2020. Adherence to COVID-19 precautions required. No smoking or recreational drug use. References required. Some acres are currently leased short term for grazing and planting, could be available in the near future.
Currently in operation? Yes
Type of farming: Organic methods, never sprayed but not certified. Formerly used for direct-market grass-fed beef operation.
Acres: 70 acres, about 1/2 woods with good quality timber ready for harvest. About 5 acres tillable currently used for hay. Remainder open, rolling ground with scattered trees and brush previously used for grazing. Some vacant acres could be sold separately from the farm. Several scattered apple trees, diverse woodlot, excellent rich soils, several good garden plots, small wetland area near creek,no floodplain.
Farm structures available? Yes
Beautiful timber barn with year-round piped, gravity-fed spring water, updated electrical, internal chicken coop, calving pen, loading pen, 2 separate fenced barnyards, metal shop (previously used for woodworking), tractor shed, small garage and 2 separate homes (property owner will remain in one home).
Farmhouse available? Yes
Charming, excellent condition 2 bed,1 bath historic farmhouse that has been completely refurbished. LP and wood heat. Aretesian spring water. Multiple entrances would allow space to be split and used in different ways. Fiber-optic internet service allows for a home-based office. Utilities would be shared with the rest of the farm. Grid-tied solar panels help with electrical bill. Very tranquil setting with the 2 houses 100 ft. apart sharing the same yard, so a peaceful, respectful lifestyle would be required. Secluded, set back from a small road. Nearby public lands for recreational opportunities.
