Three easy ways to love your farmer, and one fun challenge!
- Shop at your winter farmers’ market! Yes, fresh greens, carrots, potatoes, and more are available in the winter time, and your mind may just be blown my how delicious the spinach is this time of year.
- Join a Community Supported Agriculture program at a local farm. This is the time of year when farmers are investing a lot into their farms so they can bring you fresh, delicious, nutritious food all year. You can help farms thrive by investing now–and it will be like getting a gift every week at the height of the growing season.
- Take a cooking class! One of the most intimidating parts of shopping at a farmers’ market or joining a CSA is knowing how to use the diversity of vegetables that are available to you. By learning some new skills now, you will have a jump on the season, and will be excited about trying new things at the market this spring.
Take the radish challenge!
Okay, so you think you don’t like radishes. Maybe they are too spicy, or maybe you just don’t know what to do with them, so you pass them over at the farmers’ market. Well, I’m going to let in on a little secret: winter watermelon radishes. You can thank me later. Watermelon radishes in the middle of winter are the fresh, crunchy, slightly spicy, but mostly sweetish treat you have been waiting for. And, your winter farmer just happens to have them. So here is what you do–your kids are going to love this.
- Peel a whole watermelon radish
- Slice the radish into 1/8 inch slices (or something close to that)
- Use a fun shaped cookie cutter to make radish bites
- Serve with yogurt dip (recipe below) or a creamy salad dressing
